Lesson 20: Installing an Operating System

Before we begin

Installing the OS is a lot easier than you may think. Most require you to turn on your computer then immediately insert the CD and follow the on screen instructions. It is also HIGHLY recommended you read the OS instruction manual before installing.

Step 1: Enter BIOS

You should still be in BIOS from the previous lesson. If not, go there now by doing the following:

  • Turn on your computer
  • You should see something that says "Press DELETE to enter Setup" or something similar
  • Follow any onscreen instructions

Step 2: Configure boot sequence

With most newer computers, this is set up for you automatically, however, it's good practice to verify it is set up correctly.

Usually found in the Advanced Settings, look for something that says "First Boot Device" "Second Boot Device" "Third Boot Device" or similar to those. You should set them in order by what you want the computer to boot to first. It's usually set in the following order:

  • First: "Floppy Drive" (if available)
  • Second: "CD-ROM"
  • Third: "C" or "IDE" or "HDD" or "Hard Disk Drive" or similar

This tells your system to load certain components first so it can load your cd or floppy before trying to load up your hard drive.

Step 3: Save your settings

Near the bottom of the screen should be a list of key commands. One will tell you which button to hit to save your current settings. Do this now and select "Yes" to confirm when asked.

Step 4: Restart and immediately insert the installation CD

After you save your settings, your computer should automatically restart. If it does not restart, there will be an "Exit" option in BIOS.

As soon as your computer restarts, press the eject button on the CD-ROM, insert the OS installation CD and press the eject button again to close the CD-ROM.

Step 5: Follow on-screen instructions

Your CD should automatically load up and now all you have to do is follow the on-screen instructions to complete the OS installation.

You may have to press any button on the keyboard if you see "Boot from CD-ROM" but since your hard drive is new, it should automatically boot to the CD.

If the install screen did not automatically load, press the reset button on your computer. If it still doesn't load, consult your OS instruction manual.
