Lesson 3: Installing the Processor

NOTE: When handling a processor, NEVER TOUCH THE BOTTOM OF THE PROCESSOR. Always hold it from the sides and when working on computers, always wear an anti-static wrist strap.

NOTE: These instructions are written for installing an AMD processor. Installing an Intel processor is slightly different but the concept is the same. Always read the instruction manual before installing the processor or any other component.

Step 1: Locate the processor socket and lever

I want to copy the note from above just to make it extra clear. These instructions are written for installing an AMD processor. Installing an Intel processor is slightly different but the concept is the same. Always read the instruction manual before installing the processor or any other component.

Installing an Intel processor isn't all that different but is enough that if you're doing so and reading through my AMD installation guide, you may become confused. Please consult your owners manual if you're installing an Intel processor. I will go ahead and add a few notes for intel users but in the future, I will add an entire guide for Intel users!

Now onto locating the socket and lever. It's hard to miss, you will notice it immediately after looking at the motherboard.

Intel users may have a "plastic shield" and a metal shield above the socket along with a lever. You can discard the plastic shield once it's removed. (not shown in the image below)

Step 2: Lift the lever

Opening the lever is as simple as 1-2-3

  1. Place your thumb on the end of the lever and push slightly down and outward.
  2. Slightly push the lever outward until it clears the notch holding it in place.
  3. Pull up on it until it's at a 90 degree angle.

For Intel users, open the lever like we did with the AMD socket and lift the metal shield. (not shown in the images below)

Step 3: Examine the Socket and Processor

Notice the missing pin hole in the picture below. This is missing for a reason, to ensure the processor only goes in one way.

Intel users will have a tab on two sides that line up with the sides of the processor. (not shown in the images below)

socket am2

This missing pin hole will line up with the processor. Usually indicated with a triangle on the top corner of the processor it lines up with. Also, you could hold the processor from the sides and look on the bottom to locate the missing pin.

Here is a better example:

Step 4: Install the Processor

Line up the processor corner with the corner on the socket with the missing pin. Now just drop it in.

If you did it properly, the processor will literally fall into place.

Step 5: Close the Lever

Once the processor is in the socket, pull down on the lever and lock it into place the same way you opened it.

NOTE:On Intel, close the shield on top of the processor then push down on the lever and lock it into place.

Now that the processor is in place, lets install the heatsink: Lesson 4: Installing the Heatsink.
