Lesson 11: Installing the Video Card
NOTE: Please do not mistake an AGP Video Card with a PCI Video Card or a PCI Express Video Card. Yes they are all video cards but are installed into different slots. Before continuing this lesson, double check which slot your video card will go into and read the instruction manuals.
Step 1: Before we begin
In the example below, we are installing a PCI-Express x16 Video card. However installing another type of video card is very similar, you just need to find the right slot for it. If your video card doesn't line up with the slot, DO NOT force it in. Sometimes it will be a tight fit and like the ram, if the notches don't line up, don't force it in. Again, please double check everything and read the instruction manuals before installing a video card.
Step 2: Locate the PCI-Express x16 Slot
If you're unsure where your PCI-Express x16 slot is located, consult your motherboard manual.
Step 3: Remove metal insert
On the back of the case are many temporary metal inserts. To install any PCI, AGP or PCI-Express expansion cards, we have to remove the metal insert. If you take your video card and hold it over the slot, you will see which metal insert you need to remove.
Each case is different so that means the removal of metal inserts are different. Some have to be popped out using a screw driver, others have a "locking" mechanism on top of it that you can lift up and remove the cover.
Step 4: Install the Video Card
Similar to installing RAM, line up the notches on the card and the slot and press down on both ends gently until it slides into place. There's only one way it can be inserted so do not force it in.
Sometimes you need to adjust the tab to fit correctly into a slit at the bottom of the case. You can gently bend this to make it fit correctly if needed.
Note: Some high-end video cards require extra power and need to be connected to the power supply. There should be one or two 4-pin connections coming from your power supply just for your video card. Your video card may have also come with an adapter. Go ahead and hook these up now.
