Lesson 2: Setting Up The Motherboard

Step 1: Ground Yourself & Remove Side Panel on Case

NOTE: Before installing any components, always read users manual first. Not every component is the same and if you see words you do not understand, look them up. Understanding the component, key concepts and words are the key to avoiding a dumb mistake.

We are not going to mount the motherboard into the case just yet. We need to make sure we are properly grounded using the antistatic wrist strap.

Let's open the case and take the door off. To do this, you may need some tools or it may slide off. Every case is different so be sure to read the owners manual on how to do this.

When you put the wrist strap on, make sure the metal underside of the strap is touching your skin, and attach the clip to metal on the case.

Step 2: Remove Motherboard from box and bag

Motherboards come in a nice anti-static bag. After you remove the motherboard from the bag, set the bag to the side for now. We will use it in a later step.

The motherboard should also come with a thin piece of foam. We will sit the motherboard on this foam on our work bench. If it does not come with the foam, you can use the bag instead.

Step 3: Examine the Motherboard

Look at the motherboard and inspect it for any bent pins. Below is an example of an AMD motherboard. At first glance, it may look intimidating but actually it is not. Use this image to become familiar with the location and terminology of its parts.

Next Lesson: Installing the Processor

Why would we want to install the processor before mounting the motherboard you ask?

Installing the main components before it's mounted puts less stress on the board decreasing our risk of damaging it. Plus, there's a lot more room to work with than when it's inside the case. So let's get started: Lesson 3: Installing the Processor.
