Lesson 5: How to Find a Cheap Heatsink
Notes we've taken concerning the Heatsink:
- Processor Interface (Socket): AM2
Step 1: What To Look For
We need to find a heatsink that's compatible with our processor socket: AM2 in our example.
Heatsinks can get fairly expensive but you can usually find one for under $25
Step 2: Finding a Heatsinnk
Let's go ahead and navigate to the heatsinks:
Computer Hardware --> Cooling Products or Fans & Heatsinks --> CPU Fans & Heatsinks--> Socket Type (AM2)
-Order by "lowest price"
I immediately find a heatsink for under $20.
COOLER MASTER RR-910 Heatsink - $19.99
This will get the job done for us if all we need is an inexpensive heatsink for an OEM processor. If you want a high quality heatsink for overclocking your CPU or a high-end gaming machine, be prepared to spend at least $40.
Total spent so far:
- Processor: AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000 - $54.99
- Heatsink: Included with processor - $0
** These prices are taken at the time of this writing and are subject to change at any time without notice.
